Bula, everyone!
I'm a US Peace Corps Volunteer who has been serving in rural Fiji for over two years now. I just extended my service for a third year because I was not ready to leave!
I originally hail from West-by-god Virginia, and am proud of my Appalachian roots. However, I was drawn west by big skies and bigger mountains to do my undergrad in Natural Resource Management at Colorado State. I spent a few seasons working for the Forest Service doing wilderness trails work, before I drove my life up the Alcan to Fairbanks, Alaska to pursue my Master's at University of Alaska.
I knew I had an affinity for rural places, and now I know I also have an affinity for shorelines. Since coming to Fiji, I have been working with some awesome folks on sustainable development and natural resource management efforts. Local people depend on resources from land and sea for subsistence and income. Development pressure, growing populations, and climate change are real threats we are working to address.
This blog is my personal forum for sharing what it's like to live and work as a PCV and student in rural Fiji. Thanks for visiting!
